Background of Hachisuka Kotetsu

The Hachisuka Kotetsu sword, forged in 1665 by the renowned blacksmith Nagasone Okisato, also known as Kotetsu, holds a distinguished place in Japanese history. Named after the Hachisuka clan, who ruled the Tokushima domain, this sword exemplifies the mastery and skill of its creator. The inscription on the blade, "長曽弥興里入道虎徹" (Nagasone Okisato nyuudou Kotetsu), along with the date "寛文五年乙巳霜月十一日" (Kanbun 5, November 11), signifies its origin and the remarkable craftsmanship involved in its creation.

One of the notable aspects of Hachisuka Kotetsu is its exceptional cutting ability, evidenced by the cutting test inscription "弐ツ胴截断" (futatsu dousetsudan), indicating it could cut through two corpses piled together. The person who conducted this test was Yamanokaemon Nagahisa, whose name is also inscribed on the blade. The Hachisuka sword, with its impeccable balance and sharpness, served as a symbol of power and prestige for the Hachisuka clan, reflecting their influence and martial prowess during the Edo period.

In Touken Ranbu, Hachisuka Kotetsu is portrayed as an attractive young man with golden armor inspired by the Hachisuka clan's koshirae, though the actual design of the sword's fittings is unknown. Kotetsu admires Nagasone Kotetsu’s skill and ruggedness. As one of the five starter swords, he often appears alongside Kashuu Kiyomitsu, Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Kasen Kanesada, and Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki in promotional materials and fan works. Despite this prominent role, close relationships among the starter swords are rarely depicted outside of game mechanics.
