Background of Souza Samonji

The Souza Samonji katana, a masterpiece by the renowned swordsmith Samonji from the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392), carries a rich history marked by its distinguished owners and significant events. Originally owned by Miyoshi Masanaga, also known as Miyoshi Sousan, the sword's name is derived from his priest name. It was later gifted to Takeda Nobutora, whose daughter included it as part of her dowry when she married Imagawa Yoshimoto in 1537. The katana, also known as Yoshimoto Samonji, came into the possession of Oda Nobunaga after Yoshimoto's death at the Battle of Okehazama in 1560. Nobunaga shortened the blade and inscribed on its tang: "On the 19th day of the fifth month of Eiroku three through the killing of Yoshimoto this sword came into the possession of Oda Owari-no-kami Nobunaga."

Following Nobunaga's death during the Honnoji Incident in 1582, the sword was inherited by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Nobunaga's key retainers and later the second unifier of Japan. After Hideyoshi's death in 1589, the katana passed to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the final unifier of Japan, after his victory at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Despite being burnt in the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657 and subsequently reforged, the sword retained its historical significance. It eventually became part of a shrine exhibit commemorating Nobunaga's achievements, donated by Emperor Meiji. Revered as the sword of conquerors, the Souza Samonji was more a symbol of power than a battle weapon, especially during Nobunaga's possession, when it was marked with his title "Demon King of the Sixth Heaven" (第六天魔王).

In the game and anime series Touken Ranbu, players assume the role of a sage (審神者, saniwa) who travels into the past to defeat evil forces and has the ability to animate legendary swords, depicted as attractive young men. In Touken Ranbu, Souza Samonji takes human form, with the engraving from Nobunaga manifested as a large butterfly-like mark on the left side of his chest. Souza was often treated more like a possession than a battle sword, which significantly affects his personality. This is especially true during Nobunaga's possession, where he was traumatized by the engraved mark.
