Background of Kogitsunemaru

The Kogitsunemaru sword, forged in 989 CE by the renowned blacksmith Sanjo Munechika, holds a unique and mystical place in Japanese history. According to legend, Munechika encountered a mysterious boy near the Fushimi Inari gate who was believed to be the fox deity Inari. After praying at the shrine, the boy, with his extraordinary skill, assisted Munechika in forging the sword, which became his greatest masterwork. In honor of the deity's assistance, Munechika named the sword "Kogitsunemaru" (kogitsune meaning little fox).

Throughout its history, Kogitsunemaru has been celebrated not only for its superior craftsmanship but also for its divine origins. The sword was cherished by various samurai and noble families, symbolizing the harmonious blend of human skill and divine intervention. Its mystical background and the legend of the fox deity have made Kogitsunemaru a revered artifact, embodying the spirit and cultural heritage of Japan.

In the game and anime series Touken Ranbu, players assume the role of a sage (審神者, saniwa) who travels into the past to defeat evil forces and has the ability to animate legendary swords, depicted as attractive young men. The character of Kogitsunemaru is inspired by the legendary sword believed to be the one from the song 'Kokaji.' In the game, Kogitsunemaru takes human form, embodying both elegance and strength, with a manner of addressing the saniwa as "nushi-sama," a term traditionally used by a woman towards a man she is intimately familiar with. Several swords named Kogitsunemaru exist, including one enshrined at Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine and another belonging to Shingen Takeda. Kogitsunemaru's design and personality reflect the rich history and mystical origins of the sword, blending historical accuracy with creative interpretation. Notably, he requires half the resources to repair compared to other Tachis, highlighting his unique attributes within the game. His crest, the Kujou clan crest, references the legend of Tsunenori Kujou cutting lightning with a blade called Kogitsunemaru.
