Background of Tsurumaru Kuninaga
Tsurumaru Kuninaga, a distinguished sword smithed by Gojou Kuninaga in 1053, is a masterpiece of the Yamashiro Gojo school, originating in the late Heian period. Forged by the grandson and disciple of the renowned Sanjou Kokaji Munechika of the Yamashiro Sanjou school, Tsurumaru has a rich history interwoven with Japan's political and cultural transitions. Initially owned by Sadayasu of the Adachi Clan during the Kamakura period, Tsurumaru was embroiled in the Shimotsuki Incident, a political rivalry that led to Sadayasu's death. Hojo Sadatoki, the regent of the Shogunate, desired the beautiful blade and unearthed it from Sadayasu's grave.
Following the downfall of the Kamakura Shogunate, Tsurumaru passed through various hands, including the illustrious Oda Nobunaga, who presented it to his valued retainer, Mori Yoshinari. The sword's journey continued as it was placed in a shrine, only to be taken by Koudeki of the Honami Clan, who later gifted it to the Date Clan of the Sendai Domain in 1716. Eventually, Tsurumaru was presented to the Meiji Emperor in 1901, symbolizing Japan's industrial revolution and modernization into the 20th century. Today, Tsurumaru Kuninaga is displayed in the Museum of the Imperial Collections (Sannomaru Shozokan) in Tokyo, alongside other treasured blades such as Ichigo Hitofuri, Uguisumaru, and Hirano Toushirou.
In the game and anime series Touken Ranbu, players animate legendary swords, depicted as attractive young men, to defeat evil forces in the past. Tsurumaru Kuninaga, one of the oldest swords in the game, was forged in 1053 by Gojou Kuninaga. In human form, he resembles a crane, a symbol of fortune and longevity, yet his history brought misfortune to his masters. Known for seeking surprises to combat boredom, Tsurumaru is well-preserved from the Heian period. Often depicted with Ookurikara, Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, and Taikogane Sadamune, he is part of the Dategumi, swords associated with the Date Clan of Sendai Domain.
