About Naginata

The naginata is a traditional Japanese polearm, historically wielded by samurai, ashigaru (foot soldiers), warrior monks, and famously by the onna-musha, female warriors of the Japanese nobility. Characterized by a curved blade mounted on a long wooden shaft, the naginata combines reach, speed, and cutting power, making it highly versatile in combat.

Its design allows for slashing, stabbing, hooking, and sweeping attacks, and its balanced weight makes spinning and turning maneuvers highly effective, controlling a large radius around the wielder. On the battlefield, the naginata gave foot soldiers a strategic advantage, allowing them to strike opponents from a distance, maintain defensive posture, and deliver powerful blows that leveraged both the shaft and blade.
