Background of Ichigo’s Sword
Ichigo Kurosaki is a human shinigami hybrid soul reaper and the main protagonist of the anime and manga series Bleach. As a human with shinigami powers, Ichigo is considered to be extremely special, which earned him the rarely used title "Substitute Shinigami". Originally recruited by the soul reaper Rukia to protect his home town from corrupted souls known as Hollows, Ichigo uses his superhuman spiritual strength (his soul), represented by his Zanpakuto sword "Zangetsu" to fight for justice.
The Zangetsu (trans. "Slaying Moon") is the powerful sword Ichigo uses to fight his enemies. Formed by the fusion of his shinigami and hollow powers, this sword resembles the appearance of a large, oversized knife. The handle’s cloth wrapping can react to the will of the Zangetsu, changing its length during battle to fight effectively in mid-range combat. The sword also has the special ability to instantly release spiritual pressure (Reiatsu) at the tip of its blade, which results in a deadly “crescent moon” slash attack against its opponents. The Zangetsu is a sword which is incredibly unique in that it does not possess either a tsuba or proper hilt and is always in its shikai form.
