Shunsui Kyoraku is a member of the Gotei 13, one of the armed forces of the Soul Society in the anime and manga series Bleach. Shunsui is one of the oldest and most revered captains in the Soul Society. Striving for peace and justice, Shinsui fiercely protects the lives of those who are innocent. Shunsui advanced within the ranks of the Shinigami, earning the prominent position of captain of the 1st Division. Shunsui is a masterful swordsman who possesses great skills in the art of Shunpo, a technique which allows him to move incredibly fast when avoiding attacks from his enemies.

The Katen Kyokotsu (trans. “Bones of Heavenly Blooming Madness”) is Shunsui’s trademark Zanpakuto weapon and are a pair of swords (daisho) which he uses to fight for the fearsome military organization “the Gotei 13.” The true power of these swords activates when he says his signature poem-like command “When the Flower Wind Rages, the Flower God Roars, When the Wind of Heaven Rages, the God of the Underworld Sneers”. When released, the Katen Kyokotsu transforms into a pair of large, curved swords known as scimitars. These swords have the special ability to force Shunsui’s opponents to play a “childlike game.” Anyone who steps within the spiritual boundary of the Zanpakuto is forced to play this “game,” whose rules are created by the Katen Kyokotsu.
